Inside a healthy lithium-ion cell, lithium ions move freely between the electrodes — protected by a thin, stable SEI layer that keeps the chemistry calm and the battery safe.

During the slow first charge, a protective Solid Electrolyte Interphase builds up on the graphite anode. A strong, uniform SEI is the foundation of a safe, long-lasting battery.

Damage, aging, overcharging, or impact can crack the SEI. The exposed graphite reacts with the electrolyte, generating heat and releasing the first gases — hydrogen, CO, VOCs — long before any smoke or flame.

Once reactions start, they feed on themselves: more heat creates more gas, which creates more heat — racing toward venting, fire, or explosion in a matter of minutes.
